Raising greater awareness
Since 1987, in the U.S. every year we celebrate Women’s History Month in March to honor women’s contributions to history, culture, and society. 2022 is no different.
From Rosa Parks to Susan B. Anthony, Women’s History Month is a dedicated month to reflect on the important influences of women in U.S. history. Between 1988 and 1994, Congress passed additional resolutions requesting and authorizing the President to proclaim March of each year as Women’s History Month. Since 1995, Presidents have issued a series of annual proclamations designating the month of March as “Women’s History Month” that applaud and recognize the specific achievements women have made over the course of American history.
The Women of PHP
At PHP, we celebrate our women each and every day. While emphasizing diversity in the workplace is not only the right thing to do from an ethical standpoint, but also a way to keep the best-in-class talent in the industry. More than 53% of the PHP Active Agent Population are women.
America’s demographics are changing and shifting from diversity as a minority of the people to a collective majority. As the talent pool grows, organizations must demonstrate equal opportunity for all – especially women.
Focusing on Women
The life insurance industry is focusing on women through the Help Protect Our Families campaign. In its second year, the Help Protect Our Families campaign aims to improve Americans’ future financial security by reducing the life insurance gap in the U.S. This March, in partnership with seven other trade organizations and 76 life carriers and distributors, the campaign will focus on an underserved market.
The life insurance ownership rate for U.S. women has dropped 10 points to 47% over the past five years. We must successfully engage women to ensure they have the life insurance coverage they need. Simply put, it’s important for our industry to understand the unique perspectives and preferences of women.
According to the Help Protect Our Families campaign page, some staggering stats* include:
- 4 in 10 women say their families would face financial hardship within 6 months should the primary wage earner die
- 70% of U.S. families with children under 18 rely on the woman’s salary
- 8 in 10 women overestimate the cost of life insurance
- 43% of uninsured and underinsured women say they need (or need more) life insurance
- 47% of women own life insurance, compared with 58% of men
With these eye-opening numbers, we need to further educate women so they can realize the need for life insurance.
International Women’s Day 2022
March 8, 2022, marks the popular International Women’s Day, a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day’s call to action is to accelerate women’s equality.
This year’s campaign theme is #BreakTheBias. “Imagine a gender-equal world. A world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination. A world that is diverse, equitable, and inclusive. A world where difference is valued and celebrated. Together we can forge women’s equality.”
There are a number of missions that International Women’s Day recognizes to help forge a gender-equal world. The goal is to celebrate women’s achievements and increase visibility while calling out inequality.
These missions include:
- To elevate women forging change via technology and sustainability in communities, workplaces and beyond
- To forge inclusive work cultures where women’s careers thrive and their achievements are celebrated
- To celebrate the work of women creatives and elevate visibility for commercial projects and commissions
- To shine a spotlight on activity uplifting and inspiring women to pursue goals without bias or barrier
- To celebrate digital advancement and champion the women forging innovation through technology
- To assist women to be in a position of power to make informed decisions about their health
Make a positive difference for women. Collectively, we can all work together to continue to pursue awareness and praise the women that change the world.
